A sad story of a sad little building. This was a three bay
commercial structure built in 1850 in the heart of historic
Georgetown. It was a wood structure wrapped in a painted rusticated
metal panel system.
Previous owners had not taken care of the building and had in fact
demolished everything behind the façade illegally.
Faced with numerous historic reviews, with our client, we first
proposed restoring the original façade and reconstructing the
building behind as a shell for a future commercial tenant. As we
studied the existing façade more it became apparent that it was
unstable and unsafe. We removed the metal panels, stripped them of
paint, and found matching panels where we were short. The façade was
rebuilt modified slightly, with a glimmering metal skin. The
interior is a combination of one and two story spaces, punctuated
by wedge like vertical elements housing stairs and mechanical
systems.
A happy end to a sad story.
