In our newly renovated office space, we applied the ideas of sustainable
design. Our decision to reues existing office space in a
historic Georgetown landmark, the Water Mill, was our first
step. This office space had existing mechanical and
sprinkler systems that we could reuse completely.
Additionally some
of the existing gypsum board walls and many of the existing
doors were repainted and reused. Sustainable
choices were made in our finishes as well. A few of these choices
include: cork floors,
recycled content gypsum board, and exposing existing brick walls.
The space was painted with light colors that naturally have less VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). With the combination of light
colored paint and windows on two sides of the office the
natural daylighting allowed for the implementation a less
intensive fluorescent artificial lighting system. All of
these choices were not only sustainable but also budget
conscious. Perhaps most importantly, the space created with
these green measures has resulted in a bright and inviting
space to work. |
