"Four Stairs," as the house is known, is located on the high ground of
a steeply sloping site in Virginia. It began as a gable-roofed,
single room, one-story with loft log house which may have been built
as early as 1730. Over the life of the home it has been added to
several times including: a shed-roofed west side log pen, a north
shed-roofed timber-framed kitchen, and a mid 19th century Greek
Revival addition to the east side.
Subsequent twentieth-century owners made muddled renovations in the
Colonial Revival style, unsuccessfully attempting to unify the
various elements. By removing the jumble of the earlier renovation
attempts, the most recent restoration/rehabilitation of the house
has meticulously resurrected and replaced historic fabric in kind by
restoring the simple, clear evolution of the dwelling.
