How do you resuscitate a condemned 19th-century building, and bring it back to life as a modern retail storefront? We had to figure out a way forward for a development company who hired us to restore the three-bay storefront on Georgetown’s bustling Wisconsin Avenue so it would be move-in ready for new tenants.
We started with what was already there—a façade clad in metal panels and painted a pale yellow, which replicated rusticated stone. Because the building is located in Georgetown’s historic district, starting new wasn’t ever an option. We carefully removed and catalogued the panels, and rebuilt the façade with only minor modifications. We then reused the metal panels and had new ones fabricated to match. We applied a silver finish to all the panels, creating a seamless look that can take you back in time—and frame a brand new retail space inside.
