Old houses can be charming—until they’re not. In this case, our clients had long inhabited Four Stairs, an 18th-century house on the high ground of a steeply sloping site in Fairfax County, Virginia. But because of its age, and the fact there were no bathrooms on its second floor (not to mention a badly executed modern-day renovation below), they ultimately needed help if they were to stay.

The redesign, first and foremost, honors the home’s history: It started as a small log cabin, which may have been built as early as 1730. A log addition came later in the century, followed by Greek-Revival additions in the mid 1820s. We removed a jumble of 20th-century renovation attempts to restore the simple, clear evolution of the original structure. Then, we surgically inserted bathrooms for two upstairs bedrooms and the master suite.

Downstairs, we restored the original parlor, dining and sitting rooms, while we removed a structurally fragile kitchen addition and replaced it with a low, porch-like post-and-beam kitchen and family room that spans the north side of the house. The new space—which looks quite old—gains more character with an existing stone fireplace we retained in the renovation.

Now, our clients and their family can continue to occupy Four Stairs for years to come—and create some history of their own.
